PREMIER DIVISION

Rosenborg defended their title again in 2003, winning a record 12th
championshup in a row. With new coach Åge Hareide, the win was never
in doubt and no other team really provided a challenge. Closest were
second placed Bodø/Glimt, which capped an excellent league season by
also reaching the cup final, only to lose out against Rosenborg.
Stabæk finished third after a good run towards the end, whereas Odd
Grenland and Viking both had stable seasons, but without really
challenging for the top spots. Brann finished seventh, despite being
in the relegation zone for major parts of the spring. Lillestrøm also
vastly improved after the summer and finished in eigth position.
Sogndal did the opposite, an excellent spring when the team challenged
for the medals was followed by a very bad fall. At the bottom, the
fight against relegation was tighter than ever. Bryne finished bottom
when their home form eluded them in fall. Away from home the team
didn't pick up a single point all season! Newcomer Aalesund were
relegated too, despite putting up an heroic performance, especially in
fall. Their fate was finally sealed when Tromsø scored the winner
with virtually the last kick of the season at Lerkendal. That goal
not only saved Tromsø, but sent Vålerenga into the play-offs too. In
the end, the team from Oslo won a dramatic second game against
Sandefjord, and saved their place. Just like their neighbours, Lyn,
last season's third place finisher, which in 2003 finished just
outside the bottom after a strong run-in.

FIRST DIVISION

In the first division there was a really tight race for the two
promotion places. In the end, two old traditional clubs made it
through, promotion specialist Hamarkameratene and newcomer
Fredrikstad. The nine times champion from Østfold drew massive crowds
in their fight to return to the top flight. Just like last season,
Sandefjord finished third, but missed out in the play-offs. Maybe
third time lucky in 2004? At the bottom, the four relegated teams
quickly separated from the rest. Newcomer Alta had no chance of
staying up, and the same destiny happened to fellow newcomer Bærum,
despite putting up a brave fight. After just escaping relegation the
last two seasons, there were no way back for Ørn-Horten in 2003,
whereas Oslo Øst had to sell their best players and were also deducted
points because of their financial situation. Releagtion was the
inevideble outcome.

SECOND DIVISION

Yet another season with only familiar faces being promoted to the
first division. Pors Grenland looked very stable all season and make
a return to the second level for the first time since 1992.
Kongsvinger only needed two years at the third level since their
relegation in 2001. Tough luck on second place Ullensaker/Kisa, whose
record would have meant promotion in any other group. Vard Haugesund
finally join their neighbours FKH and return to the first division for
the first time since 1995. Whereas Tromsdalen make an instant return
after winning their last 19 games!
