Brann - Liverpool (England) 1-1 (0-1) Att: 12 500 0-1 Robbie Fowler (10) 1-1 Geir Hasund (48) Yellow card: Neil Ruddock, Steve Harkness, Stig Inge Bjørnebye, Liverpool. - Liverpool got off to a perfect start when Fowler scored a very good goal after only 10 minutes, flicking the ball over the last defender before shooting a powerful half-volley pas Bahus. After that, the English side dominated, against the very cautious Norwegians. However, they didn't create any good chances and in the last part of the half Brann gradually worked themselves into the game. With the introduction of Mjelde at half time, Brann now played with two strikers, and immediately Liverpool was put under pressure. After only three minutes Hasund curled a good shot into the right corner and the teams were equal. Later in the half Fowler hit the crossbar, but it was the home side which went closest to score, when Flo twice shot straight at keeper James when he ought to have done better. All in all a fair result, although had Brann taken their chances and not been so overcautious in the first half, the Norwegians could easily have won, as the Liverpool defence was quite suspect at times. ***** Liverpool (England) - Brann 3-0 (1-0), agg. 4-1 Att: 42 000 1-0 Robbie Fowler (pen. 25) 2-0 Stan Collymore (61) 3-0 Fowler (78) - Like Rosenborg, Brann had in reality no chance of getting through to the semifinals in this game. Except for a short spell just before halftime, Liverpool dominated completely. In that period Skjælåen waisted Brann's best chance when he shot weakly from a good position with James stranded. The opening goal came after Eftevaag brought down Fowler, and the Liverpool striker converted the penalty himself. The introduction of Collymore after an hour led to the second, as he raced through the Brann defence, only for Ludvigsen to hit his clearance straight at him leaving goalkeeper Bahus with no chance. The third goal was an easy tap-in by Fowler after good work by Bjørnebye at the left. Still, Brann was never humiliated, but the scoreline reflects that there is yet a gap between the best English and Norwegian teams. Overall, the team from Bergen has done much better than anybody expected, and deserves praise for that.
