Cup Winners Cup, second round, first leg (23/10) ======================================== Tromsø - Chelsea 3-2 (2-0) Att: 6438 1-0 Steinar Nilsen (4) 2-0 Frode Fermann (18) 2-1 Gianluca Vialli (83) 3-1 Ole Martin Årst (84) 3-2 Vialli (89) Referee: Jacek Granat, Poland Yellow card: Morten Kræmer, Tromsø - The match was played in autricious conditions, especially in the second half, when the snow was falling heavily. In the first half, when the field was playable, Tromsø were by far the better side, and should have scored more goals than the two they managed. Chelsea showed no spirit, and no desire to win or score any goals. After the break, the game had to be stopped twice for the lines to be cleared, and Chelsea manager Guillit constantly urged the referee to abandon the game. However, he should instead be thankful for the two late strikes of Vialli, which gave the Londoners a better result than they actually deserved. In the return leg Chelsea will probably win by a couple of goals, but if they continue to play as poorly in defence Tromsø could upset them and advance to the next round. Cup Winners Cup, second round, second leg (6/11) ========================================= Chelsea - Tromsø 7-1 (3-1), agg. 9-4 Att: 29 363 1-0 Dan Petrescu (12) 2-0 Gianluca Vialli (23) 2-1 Bjørn Johansen (38) 3-1 Gianfranco Zola (42) 4-1 Frank Leboeuf (pen. 53) 5-1 Vialli (60) 6-1 Vialli (76) 7-1 Petrescu (86) Referee: Vasilij Melnitsjuk, Ukraine. Yellow card: Robin Berntsen, Jonny Hanssen, Tromsø. Red card: Jonny Hanssen, Tromsø. - Chelsea gave TIL no chance in the second leg after the surprise win in Tromsø. The gulf of class was evident from the first kick on the ball, with TIL being nowehere near the team they were two weeks ago. This was very disappointing as Chelsea again showed some weaknesses in defence. A more aggresssive approach would have made a lot of difference, instead of the cautious display the visitors presented. Their cause was not helped when Hanssen was sent off after his second yellow card when he handled the ball in the area at 3-1. By then, both teams knew there was no way back for TIL. This was the 13th loss in 13 matches in the European cups for Norwegian teams in England, with a combined score of 5-73! Talk about bad statistics.
